Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United in December was preceded by a breakdown in his relationship with manager Erik ten Hag.

Things went south for Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag long before the Portuguese’s unsanctioned interview with Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo had been reduced to a spectator’s role since returning to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021, with Ten Hag struggling to accommodate him alongside fellow striker Edinson Cavani. Cavani’s quotes at the time, which have resurfaced recently, shed some light on Ten Hag’s predicament, with Ronaldo effectively becoming undroppable. Ronaldo left Man Utd under a cloud, having slammed the club, the Glazer family ownership, and Ten Hag in an unsanctioned interview with Piers Morgan. Despite being a club legend who won the Champions League with the Red Devils in 2008 and fetched them a then-world record €94 million transfer fee in 2009, Ronaldo’s relationship with Ten Hag had deteriorated to the point where he became frustrated and ultimately left the club.

Ronaldo’s expectation

Edinson Cavani knew that Cristiano Ronaldo‘s reputation would guarantee him his place at No.9 in Manchester United, and he was not opposed to playing with the Portuguese star. However, Cavani also knew how things work in football, and he spoke to his brother about finding another club if necessary. Ronaldo also thought that his reputation would guarantee him a starting position, and when Ten Hag dropped him, he couldn’t handle the rejection. Despite being a great professional with his targets, Ronaldo left Man Utd under a cloud, having slammed the club, the Glazer family ownership, and Ten Hag in an unsanctioned interview with Piers Morgan. However, he has now moved on and is currently playing for Saudi Pro league side Al Nassr, where he earns €200 million a year and has scored five goals in five games since arriving in January.
