Brazilian superstar Neymar is currently leading the race to secure the 2014 World Cup’s Golden Boot award.

His mission to clinch the coveted trophy has taken a step further after Nike presented him with a pair of exclusive golden boots, which he hopes will add a touch of stardust and guide the hosts to glory. Neymar, who is the tournament’s top scorer with four goals already, will wear the new and exclusive Gold Hypervenom boots, developed specifically for him, with the Brazilian contributing to the design of the boot.

The solid gold color of the boots matches the World Cup trophy he will hope to lift in the Maracanã. Neymar had previously been wearing the original Hypervenom Phantom Boot, which he launched in Rio de Janeiro before shining at the Confederations Cup last summer, from which Brazil emerged triumphant.

He has been wearing a different color variation of the boot since signing for Barcelona ahead of the 2013-14 season but will now hope to strike gold with this latest innovative style, which draws inspiration from Neymar’s childhood memories. Denis Dekovic, Nike Football Design Director, explains that when they met with Neymar, he told them that when he was 12, he used to spray paint his boots gold.

The Gold Hypervenom boots that Neymar will wear are essentially the same design that he wore at the Confederations Cup, except that they are gold in color. “He said that he always wanted a pair of gold boots but that he couldn’t find them anywhere. So we took that insight and decided this summer would be the perfect moment to create this boot for him,” explains Denis Dekovic, Nike Football Design Director. “The biggest challenge was getting the gold tone perfect so it had the right spray-painted look.

We worked closely with Neymar to get it as close to how he remembered the color when he would apply it as a kid. We’re all delighted with the results and can’t wait to see it on the pitch.” Neymar has already scored four goals in the tournament, two against Croatia and two against Cameroon, as Brazil made relatively straightforward progress from Group A. They face Chile in the first knockout round, who are considered to be the tournament’s dark horses. The new specially designed boots are bright yellow on the bottom, matching the Nike logo.
